“PLUGGING” SONGS ON AIR
•DEGRADING & PERNICIOUS’ (11 a.m.) LONDON, March 26. Recommendations in Sir Valentine Holme's report on the allegations ot corruption in the conduct oi: the 8.8. C., the governors of the 8.8. C. have appointed a committee to investigate and stamp out the practice of “plugging songs over the air. Sir Valentine s report described the system under which song: publishers nay broadcasting artists and bands to plav numbers which they desire to popularise as “degrading and pernicious.” Most music publishers and band leaders are already parties to the agreement in which they pledge themselves not to indulge in song P“Wsing but it is generally admitted that all efforts to check the practice have so far .failed. . Since Sir Valentine Holmes rcpoit was published, the spokesman for.sevoral firms of publishers have claimed that “plug money" represents a. major iteni of expenditure in publicising a new song number.
