MEDITERRANEAN BASE
POSSIBLE U.S. CLAIM FORMER ITALIAN COLONY (Special Correspondent). LONDON. March 24. It is suggested that as a result of the new American policy of active interest in _ the Eastern Mediterranean, the United States may ask for ihe trusteeship of one of the' former Italian North African colonies when the future of these colonies is discussed af the forthcoming four-Power talks in London. When the Paris Conference was unable io agree upon the future of the Italian African colonies it was decided that the matter should be discussed again by the four Foreign Ministers within 12 months. It is pointed out that the United States-new foreign policy will require naval and air bases in the Mediterranean, and that if the United States accepted the trusteeship of one of the Italian colonies from the United Nations, it would do something to answer the complaint that American foreign policy is tending to by-pass the United Nations.
The diplomatic correspondent of the Observer suggests that the United States may ask for the trusteeship of Tripolitania.
