NEWS OF THE DAY

Soil Conservation Reserves. The question of setting up soil conservation reserves throughout the Hawke’s Bay Catchment Board’s area was discussed at the last meeting of the board. Members were divided in their opinions as to whether they should be for experimental or demonstration purposes. It was finally decided that the’ matter be left to the Government members of the board to make recommendations.

Macrae Bath Receipts Attendances at the Macrae Baths this season have been well down on last season’s figures, only 14,453 persons having passed through the gates to date this season against 20,902 for the same period last year. Receipts this season have totalled £ll7 7s lid, £l2 less than last season’s receipts to mid-March. It was decided by the Borough Council at last evening’s meeting that owing to the inclement weather and the power cutoffs the closing of the baths should be left in the hands of the town clerk. Transit House Scheme As the proposed scheme was for transit houses only, and not permanent ones, the Gisborne Borough Council, on the recommendation of the Works Committee, last evening approved the proposal by the P. and T. Department to erect transit houses in Gladstone road. The buildings appeared to be of a good type and the final appearance would be good, stated the committee. Plumbing and drainage would be carried out in accordance with the council's requirements, but the by-laws would not be complied with in respect of stud size and ceiling height. Highway Improvement Co-operation with the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce and any other interested bodies in meeting the Minister of Works, Mr. R. Semple, and impressing upon him the imperative necessity of improving the NapierGisborne highway was promised by the Gisborne Borough Council last evening. Correspondence was received by the council from the chamber requesting such co-operation, and the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, and Messrs. F. Tolerton, H. F. Wise and G. D. Muirhead were appointed as representatives of the council to meet Mr. Semple. Distribution of Golf Balls

Within the next few days, a distribution of about 1350 dozen golf balls will be made throughout New Zealand, according to a circular received from, the NZ. Golf Association. The association explained that the heavy demand for golf balls within Great Britain left comparatively few available for export out of the present limited production, but balls would be shipped as soon as they became available. For some time one or two agents had been receiving small quotas at intervals, but- it had been their policy to hold the shipments until a sufficient quantity had been accumulated to permit distribution throughout New Zealand.

Grader Drops From Road While operating on Darky’s Spur, on the Napier-Wairoa road, last week, one of the Hawke’s Bay County Council’s recently acquired graders left the road and came to rest at the foot of a drop of about 100 ft. The grader was driven by Mr. C. M. Tong and at the time was negotiating a sharp bend, but was unable to make the turn. The driver, in an endeavour to save the machine, dropped the blade, but could not prevent it from falling. He managed to jump clear. The machine, which was insured, was recently purchased by the county council for £4OOO. The chair* man of the council said subsequently that the machine could not be replaced at the present time. He added that, althoqgh efforts were being made to recover the grader, it looked as if it would be a total loss. .
