FINNISH BARQUE DISABLED AND LEAKING COMPANY'S PRIVATIONS (11 a.m.) CAPE TOWN, March 24. The tour-masted Finnish barque Passat has completed a grim 82-day voyage from the Baltic, leaking and without canvas for 53 days. The crew and 12 passengers were almost without food. The ship left Sweden on New Year’s Eve. An Atlantic gale spoiled much of the food, and swept away two lifeboats and all the canvas. A leak opened and tor 15 days the crew and passengers baled water which was sometimes 3ft. deep in the cabins. The Passat for three weeks was almost becalmed, She carried timber for Cape Town.
