CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS
The To Puia tepid baths will be the scene of popular acquntie sports on Saturday next when the annual East Coast swimming championships arc set down for decision, The best of the district exponents are to contest the various titles and a strong party of members of the Gisborne Amateur Surf and Swimming Club will add interest to the hanc'ican events included in the generous carnival programme. The swimming pool, situated at the rear of the Te Puia Hotel, is 33 1-3 yds. lone, the regulation length, and is 3Cft. wide. It was officially opened in the summer of 1935. Up to the outbreak of the war the carnival was a highly popular annuel event, people attending from all parts of the Coast and from Gisborne, the town supplying many competitors. Te Puia Snrings, situated in a hollow sheltered from biting winds, yet 737 ft. above sea level, is only 65 miles from Gisborne and can be reached comfortably over a good road in 2t hours. The bath can cater for large numbers at a time. During carnivals, adequate viewpoints for soectators are available from the natural terrace and rocks overlooking the pool. The organisation of the coming carnival is receiving the attention of a capable committee. Buffet afternoon tea will bo available for patrons, who will be assured of an enjoyable day's outing. Arrangements for transport from the Gisborne area are to be discussed at a meeting at the Macrae Ba*hs on Thursday evening, to which all swimmers, parents and supporters are invited.
