FIGHT IN MELBOURNE
FORMER GISBORNE BOY ALLEN MEETING NEGRO George Allen, who formerly resided in Gisborne where, as a pupil of Mr. Johnny Summers, he became known as a hard-hitting boxer and entered the professional ranks, has been boxing impressively in Australia and is matched to meet the American negro middleweight, Emery Jackson, at the Melbourne stadium this evening. Allen was originally matched against the Australian champion, Dave Sands, who. however, has been replaced on the programme by Jackson. Described as a New Zealand surprise packet, Allen won convincingly in his Melbourne debut on February 8 when he always had the upper hand of Jack Marr, Victoria. Keen Melbourne judges then described Allen as the best New Zealand boxer seen there since pre-war days. Jackson is renowned for typical negro toughness and should provide a searching test for the former Gisborne boy. Allen, who is trained by Mr. Dan Cannole. Brisbane, was recently reported to be contemplating a visit to the Dominion in April.
