FIELD DAY FOR JEUNE

THREE TROPHIES WON

A record number of marksmen from the Wairoa. Nuhaka, Ruatoria, Kaitawa and the Gisborne clubs competed for the East Coast Rifle Association’s trophies on the Sponge Bay range. The Rait Memorial Belt was won by F. J. Jeune, with the fine rifle score of 148 out of a possible of 150, over the 300, 500 and 600 yds ranges. The runner up was R. Burson, with an aggregate of 143 points, while R. Bull with 142 filled third place. The Taxi Cup for the highest scratch score at 300 yds resuited in a .tie between R. O. Bull and F. J. Jeune. both marksmen scoring the possible of 50. In the shoot off which comprised one compulsory sighter and three counting shots R. Bull secured the trophy, scoring three more bulls-eyes, while Jeune dropped a point with his third shot. At the 500 yds range Jeune won the Townley Cup with the only possible in the match. R. Burson being unlucky to drop a point with his last shot. The 600 yds match for the Field Cup proved the most interesting contest of the day, three marksmen returning rifle scores of 48. F. J. Jeune proved the winner on the fifth shot from P. Dolman, the score then reading 24 to 23. Team trophies competed for during the day comprised the Bulls-eye Plate for teams of 5 over 300, 500 and 600 yds. The Chambers Shield over the 300 and 500yds. ranges, and the Pop Jeune Mug for the 300 and 600yds. distances. Gisborne No. 1 team were successful in holding these three trophies, Gisborne No. 2 being runner-up in the first two matches and Wairoa No. 1 were in second place in the Pop Jeune Mug contest.

At the conclusion of the shooting appreciation was voiced by the presidents of the various clubs present on the excellent day’s sport. This was chiefly due to the efforts of the executive and the markers. Special thanks were extended to Mr. Shaskey for the able way in which he handled the refreshments:
