£SO GAMING FINE

ACTING FOR PRINCIPAL COMMENT BY JUDGE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jail. 31. In the Supreme Court yesterday, Mr Justice Cleary imposed a fine of £SO, in default two months’ gaol, on James Ralston, aged 50, pensioner, who pleaded guilty to carrying on business as a bookmaker. He was allowed a month to pay. “I understand,” said the judge, “that you have been operating in only a small way and acting mainly for a principal. You may have difficulty in paying the fine, but if you have a principal he may be in better circumstances and may be able to help you.” Counsel for the prisoner stated that the man had served in the British Army in the first World War and came to New Zealand with his wife and child in 1925 to work in the West Coast mines. About a year ago he had to give up work on account of a lung complaint contracted in the mines. It was then that he started to take a keen interest in horseracing. His pension was a little over £4 a week.
