RAIN IN 1946

HEAVIEST ON WEST COAST 2851 N. AT MILFORD SOUNDS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. Among the larger centres of population, three towns on the West Coast of the South Island, and Auikland and Invercargill had the highest number of rain days in 1946 but the tainfall in inches was much heavier on the West Coast than in Auckland and Invercargill. Whangarei and Waihi ranked next to Hokitika, Greymouth and Westport in the latter respect. By a wide margin Alexandra had the fewest rain days and the lowest fall in inches. Highest Totals From other available records the following were the five highest rainfall totals for both isands during 1946: — North Island. —Mangahao No. 1 Dam, 280 (249); Mangahao No. 2 Dam. 115.80 (not recorded): Orongorongo reservoir, 127 57 (228); Arapeti. 115.51 (not recorded); Kaimai. 113.18 (213). South Island.—Milford Sound, 285.56 (207); Downer Town( Stockton), 258.23 (205); Otira, 225.66 (225); Marian Camp (Hollyford), 170.08 (178); Wataroa, 194.38 (208). Lowest Totals The five lowest rainfall totals in the North we all in Hawke's Bavg and in North Island were all in Hawke’s Bay, and in the South Island all in Central Otago. The figures are: North Island.—Mount Vernon, 24.93 (156); Te Kura, 26.73 (105); Poukawa, 28.96 (114); Te Mata, 9.62 (123); Glencoe. 29.64 (136). South Island.—Earnscleugh, 12.49 (66); Galloway, 12.53 (98); PYatearoa, 12.98 (72); Moa Creek, 13.39 (67); Waipiata, 14.91 (86).
