WANGANUI CUP RUN FOR CHAMPION BEAU LE HAVRE

The Wanganui Jockey Club will open its Cup meeting tomorrow, concluding it the following week-end. The acceptances are not as large as expected on the nominations received, but the reason is not hard to explain.

• A very big holiday programme was recorded by the majority of horses in training in the various centres and then came the fourday meeting of the Wellington Jockey Club, so that horses, which are not machines, have had to be eased up in quite a few cases. However, the fields are not so bad, with the tlu*ec-year-old Beau lc Havre an attraction in itself.

The course is reported to be in excellent order and, being of a sandy formation, never gets hard like many other courses in the summer months.

WESTMERE HANDICAP

The meeting will open at 11.15 with the Westmere Highweight, in which Adrigoole is joint topvveight. He is a fair sort in races of this description. Lambro has won amateur riders’ races so he, too, should not worry about his 10.2. Phalaria has not raced for some time, but comes up well fresh, while Mountain Fox must be considered with 9.13. Foreign Coin was in the money the other day over' hurdles at the Ashhurst meeting. Rockanui failed at Trentham, but may do better now in weaker company. Nancy Boswell won a seven-furlong Maiden race at New Plymouth on Boxing Day with an impressive finishing run, so may take out again here. The remaining three have not much form, and the best backed may come from NANCY BOSWELLS. Adrigoole. Lambro.

THE JUVENILES

Night School heads the list in the Springvale Juvenile, and on ills frentham running on the third day should go very close now. Bronstar is not racing as well as expected, mainly on account ot his inability to get away smartly enough, so a horse that is not a good beginner is at a decided disadvantage on the Wanganui track. Brentford has not yet raced. General Victory ran quite a fair race at Wellington on the third day and is a place possibility now; Kittywake, a filly by Neptune from the Australianbred mare Gay Genet, has only had one race, when she finished out of the money at Hastings cn January 2, but since then has improved sufficiently to say that she should win a rgee before long. Royal Cambria, who has a couple of minor placings to his credit, might prove the best of the remainder. Three that may appear are

SIGHT SCHOOL. encral Victory. Bronstar.

KAI-IWI MAIDEN

There is not a great deal of form offering among the big field of maidens. Flare Path, on his second to Cressida the other day at Trentham. will not be at very long odds now as that form was good. Homespun, Te Aki and Night Charm are the only horses that have place money to their credit.. .Te Aki has only raced once and that at Hastings, wlien he finished third to Tracer' and Flare Path the second day of the summer meeting. Favouritism may be shared by FLARE PATH. Te Aki. Homespun.

VICTORY HACK

■ Only eight figure on the card for the nine-furlong Victory Hack Handicap, in which the recent winner, Baruch, is on top of the weight list, and he should race well again. Mr. Pym was fancied in the Douro hack race at Wellington recently, but was never in tbe call in this big field when, missing the jump out. He has been racing with little luck, but his turn must come in the near future. High Assay is only fair and failed the other dav in a field that was anything but strong. Queen Plato has failed twice in recent starts, but she was big in condition and so possibly may have improved with that racing. Standee has no recent form. Nancy Boswells is in again, but may prefer the easier Highweight. Beau Raide was third at Wellington on the third day. but last Saturday was one of the last away and so did not race up to his earlier form. Master Gain is not fancied at all, but three that may not be neglected by machine patrons are

BARUCH. Mr. Pym. Beau Raide.

WANGANUI CUP

At 2.15 the Wanganui Cup is due to start , BEAU LE HAVRE, 8.9, is the topweight. It might be mentioned in passing that the highest weight ever carried to victory by a three-year-old in this race was in 1902, when Nonette led the field home with 8.11 on his back and then it was a 6st. 71b minimum so that really he was assessed as a 91b better three-year-old than Beau le Havre is now. However, getting back to this season’s Wanganui Cup, as if Beau le Havre’s supporters will have to accept a very short price. BARRAGE, 7.12, is only a fair handi-

PETRIE HACK

cap horse at best and at Wellington he appeared out of his class. LOWRY BAY’, 7.10, ran well enough at Trentham to say that he is at least a place possibility now in this 12 furlong race.

FLY’ING ACE, 7.7, will be suited by the course and might surprise. ROSSWOOD, 7.2, is only a fair hack at best, so it looks as if his job is no easy one.

SILVER PAL, 7.1, is galloping well and is being given a lightweight’s show now LOYAL 151 AN. 7.0, on recent open form, docs not appeal, but he was reported to be unlucky both days at Stratford— kapai the horse one does not have to make an excuse for. FLY’ING GOLD, 7.0, ran a good race the other day at Wellington when running second to Clyde Bridge after getting away slowly from the barrier. MOUTOA LAD, 7.0, won a hack race solidly the other day so has a little form to recommend his chances on. The form horses appear to be BEAU LE HAVRE Lowry Bay Flying Gold

TAYFORTH HANDICAP

An even lot claim engagement in the Tayforth Handicap, run over seven furlongs and 140yds. Black Plato has his work cut out to win here with 9.10. Donegal Bay is not fancied on recent form, while Citation is in rare racing trim and her condition might be the deciding factor. Broiefort Star is a recent hack winner and. like Citation and Emerge, is making her first appearance in open company and all three are possibilities Parnell has no recent form but he has done very little racing this season. Fort Royal is passed over in favour of General Saleve and Craven, who appear the best of the others. Three that might appeal CRAVEN Citation Broiefort Star

Next on the programme is the six furlongs and 80 yards Petrie Hack Handicap. Morning Dew has won the last two races contested and is well commented upon. Floral Dance is another slick hack and will be expected again here. Mangurakau goes fast, but

his form ot late tins been nothing to boast ot, while Lady Oratory is a possibility and. being a good beginner, will be at an advantage. Hadrian, on his fourth the other dav at Woodville. reads the best of the others. The betting order may be FLORAL DANCE Morning Dew Lady Oratory

FLYING HANDICAP

The first clay concludes with the open Flying .Handicap in which a field of lO has'been paid up with. Tidelcss, 9.5, ran well the first day at Wellington and on that showing appeals now. Robin’s Reward, 8.7. a fast beginner, may make amends for his Wellington defeats. Colopier. 8.6. may be elected favourite, while New Deer’s (8.2) fifth on the last day at. Wellington is good enough to spgsest him having a winning chance now Alma7,a. 7.8. is only fair, but Molly Martia. 7.7. goes very fast and on track form would about win.

Julius Caesar, 7.0. is a possibility

without Deing a recommendation. Lord Theio. 7.0, on recent form is not fancied but he is now well down in the weights so may surprise. This season Karachi, 7.0. has been very disappointing. Awaroa Stream, 7.0, also in the Cup, is a notoriously bad-mannered gelding at the barrier and generally manages to get badlv left. The favourites look like being ' COLOPIER Tideless Robin’s Reward
