MISS LANE AT CANBERRA POPULAR SWIMMER (9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 31. The New Zealand champion, Ngaire Lane, last night broke the Canberra swimming record for the 100 yards backstroke at the Canberra pool. Her time was 73 seconds, seven seconds better than the existing record of 80 seconds held by the club champion, Peggy Brophy. Miss Bropby was a close second with 7G.4 econds, breaking her own record by 3.6 seconds. Miss Lane led all the way. The president of the Canberra Swimming Club, in congratulating Miss Lane, thanked her for her magnificent effort. The New Zealand High Commissioner, Mr. J. G. Barclay, also congratulated Miss Lane. The deputy New Zealand Prime Ministerfi Mr. W. Nash, said Miss Lane had done splendid work for New Zealand. She was a quiet, unassuming type which performed extraordinary feats. Miss Lane’s time was equal to the New Zealand record. She said she was well pleased with the pool which was equa lto New Zealand’s best.
