2 MEN DROWNED
CLINTON TRAGEDY
TAKEN OUT BY CURRENT (P.A.) DUNEDIN. Jan. 30.
When a party of four harvesters went for a swim last evening in the Pomahaka River, nine miles from Clinton, two were drowned after one had got into difficulties in deep water. The victims were: Mr. Stewart Thomas Shcppart, Bal-
clutha. married, with five children Mr. Robert Douglas Kell, Taumata Clinton, single.
The other two members of the party were the Messrs. Carruthers, on whose farm the two deceased had been working. After the day's work the four men drove down to the river in a truck. None could swim well, and when Mr. Kell got into difficulties the other three made a chain to reach him. The current of the swift river kept taking them out into deep water, and eventually broke tlie chain. Messrs. Carruthers were able to reach the bank. It was not until two hours later that the first body was recovered, and the Gore police recovered the other. MAN ELECTROCUTED (P.A.) INVERCARGILL. Jan. 30.
