Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Humphrey. Haiti esplanade, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Me George, Dunedin, leave to-day for their shack at Lake Okareka, Rotorua.

Mies Beverley Leahy, Wellington, is expected at Gisborne at the week-end. She will j spend her leave with her parents, Mr, and Mrs. P. D. Leahy, Rutene road. Mr. Justice Tyndall and Mrs. Tyndall. Wellington, arrive at Gisborne on Monday to spend the Christmas season with the latter's mother, Mrs. A. Stoneham. Domett street. Mrs. de Greenlaw, Auckland, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. W. E. Goffe, for the Christmas season. Also visiting her mother is Mrs. H. P. Barro 1, with her husband nnd family, of Tolaga Bay, Miss H. Waterston. late of London, who is visiting friends in Gisborne, will be showing a British War Office film on Palestine anti also will be giving a series of lantern slide lectures dealing with the Jew-Arab problem and the future of the Middle East. GISBORNE CROQUET CLUB The annual festive party was held last Saturday at the Gisborne Croquet Club’s greens, Rutene road Reserve, when a happy afternoon of lawn competitions was enjoyed by all. Afternoon tea was served in the club-house, which had a large bowl of carnations on the table with the traditional cake. At a suitable interval, shoulder sprays, made by Mrs, W. E, Kennedy, were presented to the president, Mrs. W. G. Alexander, the vice-president, Mrs. A. Brown, and the secretary, Mrs. H. Gilmer. A Christmas gift with accompanying good wishes was offered from members to the president and secretary. Opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mrs. L. F. Sarten, who is leaving Gisborne, a floral posy being offered by members. . A floral tribute was also presented to Mrs. J. Booth, whose birthday coincided with the party date. At the conclusion of a very successful function, the president extended the compliments of the season to all, with members reciprocating. WOMEN’S CLUB A very successful evening was held this week at the Women’s Club when members met for the annual Christmas party. A profusion of beautiful mixed blooms, the work of Mrs. Gilmer, added to the atmosphere of gaiety. In a gown of black lace and georgette, the president, Mrs. N. Hooper, extended a warm welcome to ail present and before sitting down was presented with o posy by Mrs. A. R. Perry, Mrs. Gofle, who was celebrating a birthday, also received a floral tribute. On behalf of the gardening circle, Mrs. Perry made a generous gift of two chairs and a beautiful china rose-bowl to the club, which was also very fortunate in having a personal gift of two palm stands donated by Mrs. Hepburn. A very enjoyable series of carols was given by the newly-formed musical circle under the baton of Mrs. L. H. Elliott. The literary circle presented a humorous play, "Try Spunko”, produced by Mrs. V. Clement, and including the following cast: Miss Maclean as demonstrator, Mesdames Gilmer, Legg, Lawless. Holmes, Anderson, Vincent. Hooper and Widdowson, prompter, Mrs. Jones. An innovation for the presentation of the play was the recently hung rose and black stage curtain, which was a distinct acquisition to the performance. Vocal solos were sung by Mrs. Marsicano and Miss Scott, pianoforte duets played by Mesdames Berry and Lawford Smith, and a violin eolo by Mrs. Elliott. Miss Maclean was accorded musical honours for her donation of the handsome Christmas cake. During supper greetings were read from kindred clubs throughout the Dominion and as a finale. Mrs. Hooper, by request, gave the poem "Thanksgiving”. Following an acknowledgement by the president of the work done by members and . assistance given to {ier during her year of! office, the evening closed with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne”. j

ENGAGEMENTS Preston—Whiflans.—An engagement is announced between Edward Arthur, only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Preston, Te Hapara. Gisborne, nnd June, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. L. B. Whillans, Milford, Auckland, and late of Woodville.

Stead—Church.—An engagement is ntinounc ed between Albert Edward, oldest son of Mrs H. Stead, Wellington South, and Grace Muriel eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Church Wellington South.

TURANGA CROQUET CLUB The club captain. Mrs. Derbyshire, conducted tlie games on Thursday afternoon when members of the Turange Croquet Club held their Christmas entertainment.

Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, where the table was aglow with the club colours of blue delphiniums and red gerberas. Mesdames Donnelly, president. Barnard and Riddell were responsible for the successful arrangements. whieh members supported so generously with their offerings, for the banquet which was held at 6 p.m.. 21 people sitting down to the Christmas treat complete with large cake Gifts to members were offered in a novel way, tickets being hidden on shrubs and individuals having to seek their numeral, which was also duplicated on their Christmas parcel. Seasonal greetings were exchanged by those present before dispersing from a most enjoyable afternoon and evening. SURPRISE PARTY

Having taken up her residence in town. Mrs. J. F. Hobenton, Vogel street, was the honoured guest at a surprise party taken to her home by members of the Manutuke Guide Committee.

Mrs. Hebenton had been a member of the committee for some time and for her valued services over the years, Mrs. T. Preston, the president, asked her to accept a momenta in the form of a pair of book-ends in New Zealand woods.

In her speech Mrs. Preston regretted Mrs. Hebenton’s departure from the district and thanked her for her hell) and hospitality given to the Guides and Brownies during the years. Mesdames J. S. Nugent and It. Andrew and Miss E. Newman also added their thanks nnd wished the guest of honour a happy retirement. In her reply the recipient thanked nil who had been so good to her and mentioned her love of the work in which she at all times had been interested. Those present were Mesdames J. E. Daulton. J. Bradford, Buscke, and Miss D. Rickard. MISS MAHONEY’S BREAK-UP PARTY The studio of Miss Elva Mahoney. M.R.A.D. (London), was a pleasing sight when she entertained over 60 pupils nnd parents at the annual break-up party for the dancing season last Saturday. The studio was artistically decorated with bright flowers, ferns, and Christmas greetings, while in one corner, much to the kiddies’ delight, stood a large decorated Christmas tree.

All the games Were entered into with much enthusiasm, the music being supplied by Mrs. M. Randle, the studio pianist. Merle Me Culiough emerged the winner of the children's competition, and Mrs. Jones the winner of the parents' contest.

The biggest thrill was when Santa Claus arrived without any warning and distributed surprise packet? from the Christmas tree to ail the children and then led them in a musical march.

Ices and soft drinks were dispensed and a delicious afternoon tea nerved. Items were given by the Heikell sisters and Susanna Mbxley. Miss Mahoney chose a hand-embroidered linen suit in a natural shade, and Mrs. Randle favoured a linen frock in autumn tailings. Owing to other entertainments on the same day 15 pupils were unable to attend.
