MILLER CUP RACES POVERTY BAY V. GISBORNE The prospect of full-scale inter-club competition has aroused considerable interest in the sport of rowing, and the bridges over the Taruheru River have been used by many residents as points of vantage for the club events of the pest w2ck which lead up to the Miller Inter-club Cup race this afternoon. This event has been revived alter a seven-year interval, and will bring four crews from each club into a series of races on the Taruheru mile course tomorrow. The crews are the last four survivors in the respective clubs’ Presidents’ Fours . series. _ and points are awarded on a basis that provides against the contingency of a tie. The Poverty Boy club disposed of its semi-final races earlier in the week, and has still to vow the final event of its own President's Fours. The Gisborne club, on the Other hand, lias disposed of all races'up to the semi-final stage. , , . , Thursday night's racing under Gisborne club auspice's saw j. Hankoy, club captain, suffer his first: defeat for a long time, when he went down to another member of his family connection. I!. Hankoy, str.. Young, Simpson and Leo comprised the winning crew in this 'ace, and J. Hanlcev had with him J. Kane, D. McGiashen and f. Kane. Tho contest was close all the way down to Derby street, but over the last quarter of a mile B. Ilatikey drew away to win by a length and a half. Tn the other event T. Seeats, str. _J. Francis, Alley and Murphy scored a fairly comfortable win over D. Robinson, str., B. Le Comptc. T. Healey and Cassia. The start favoured Sccats and although Robinson made several good sprints he was never able to eliminate his opponent’s advantage.
