STRIKE AVERTED
TRAM DISPUTE PARTIES TO CONFER LAST-MINUTE DECISION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. To the relief of practically all sections of the community the threat of a strike by the Wellington City Corporation’s transport employees has been averted and all services operated normally to-day. The executive of the Tramways Union met yesterday afternoon when it was announced that the City Councli had given the union an undertaking that its transport committee would meet representatives of the union early in the New Year to consider the negotiations for a new award. On this understanding the executive of the union called of! the stop-work meeting arranged for to-day. There was an unprecedented rush in the city yesterday as suburban residents apprehensive of a transport stoppage to-day crowded in for Christmas shopping.
