U.S. ARMY’S NEEDS
I,7SOOOO__TROOPS ADEQUATE DEFENCE TRAINING ESSENTIAL WASHINGTON. Dec. 19. A high-ranking American Army) spokesman stated that a sudden attack would find the United States with only four divisions capable of resisting invasion whereas an adequate defencepolicy requires a force of at least 1.75CL000 men which could be expanded to 5,250,000 within a year. The minimum army plans call for a National Guard of 680,000. plus an organised reserve force of 876,000 with an additional unassigned reserve of 3.000.000. The spokesman said that the army commanders believe universal military training is essential. They realise it i* < impossible to forecast the shape o£ military tinny; to come which may be a fiendish combination of atomic bombs, robot rockets, radio-active gas anddeadly germs. Therefore it was imperative to organise against the possibility of an inexorable attack by tremendous forces.
