NO GENERAL RISE
AUSTRALIAN PRICES HIGHER WAGE GRANTS GOVERNMENT’S DECISION CANBERRA. Dec. 20. Industries would not be allowed to adjust their prices following the recent basic wage rise unless they received a specific authorisation from the Government. said the Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifley, after a Cabinet meeting. Appropriate price adjustments would be made when necessary if the increase in wages had to be passed on. Mr. Chifley added that a review by the Prices Commissioner had shown it was not necessary to allow a price rise by the full amount of the wage increase. The Government did not intend to pay subsidies to ollset the wage increase.
