COAL SHORTAGE BRITISH INDUSTRY MIDLANDS POWER CUTS (9 a.m.) LONDON. Dec. 20. The critical position now facing British industry is shown by reports from industrial areas in the Midlands and the Birmingham electricity undertakings, says the Daily Telegraph’s industrial correspondent. Leaders tear that unless coal supplies can be increased within a few weeks, the shedding of loads by electricity undertakings will cause the widespread closing of factories. Leyland Motors iron foundry near Preston closed yesterday for a fortnight and 1100 workers were stood off because of the exhaustion of coke stocks. The electricitv supply department in Birmingham, England's second city, has warned people that a 25 per cent, electric power cut might have to be imoosed for six weeks continuously. The department said the coal stocks would be completely exhausted by the end of January. Seventy per cent, of electric power is consumed by industry. The department, in its stir the restrictions recently on industry by the Fuel Ministry were totally inadequate.
