U.S. AIRLINERS MID-AIR COLLISION BOTH LAND SAFELY (10 a.in.) NEW YORK. Dec. 20. Eighty-four persons had a brush with death over Aberdeen, Maryland, on Thursday, when two Miami-bound passenger planes collided in mid-air. One plane, a four-engined D.C. 4, carrying 56 passengers and four members of the crew had. its tail damaged but the pilot flew it. on to a smooth landing at Washington airport where fire engines ambulances and other emergency services were waiting. The other was a twin-engined aircraft with 21 passengers and three members of the crew. It had the windshield of the cockpit caved in. a hole knocked in the fuselage and the hydraulic systems put out of action, but the pilot brought it down safely at the Aberdeen army airfield It was the first time two airliners flying in the same direction collided. Federal safety regulations require planes flying in opposite directions to maintain different altitudes. The twinengined plane was on a non-scheduled flight.
