HOPES FOR “BERNIE”
WILL HE RACE AGAIN? SUGGESTION BY VET. The opinion that the Australian racehorse, Bernborough, would be so recovered within three months from the leg injury which put him out of racing that his connections might be tempted to put him into work and race him is given in recent reports published in Australia. The opinion is quoted as being that of Mr. Roy Stewart, veterinarian, under whose treatment Bernborough has been. Bernborough's trainer, Harry Plant, however, is quoted as saying: ‘'Bernborough wili definitely recover to permit of his being sent to the stud, but if I have any say, he will never race again.”
Plant was not disposed to talk to any extent about Bernborough's future beyond expressing the hope that he could get his idol back to a state of fitness that would permit of the horse enjoying the remainder of his days in leisure.
Melbourne surgeons are stated to be well satisfied with the progress of Bernborough. Dr. George Heslop is quoted as stating that Bernborough would certainly be fit enough to undertake a stud career in the future. "The torn ligaments surrounding the injury are responding well to treatment,” lie said, “and, of course, I reset the bone on the course.” It is Plant’s intention that when Bernborough returns from Melbourne to Sydney the horse will make the trip in easy stages after stable accommodation has been arranged for him first at Albury and, for the next break of the journey, at Yass.
