NEW U.S. AMBASSADOR

POST IN LONDON (10 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Dec. 4. President Truman announced that Mr Oliver Max Gardner has been appointed Ambassador to London, succeeding Mr. Averill Harriman. Mr. Gardner has been Under-Secretary of the Treasury since February. He is a wealthy textile manufacturer.

The New York Times correspondent in Washington says that Mr. Gardner’s appointment is a significant move to have in Labour-ruled Britain an articulate expert and advocate of American democratic capitalism, and is indicative of the belief that British-American foreign relations and many joint problems rest more than ever on an economic rather than a political base.
