EIRE'S DEFENCES

EXPANDING_ALL ARMS FUTURE ROLE IN U.N. GLOBAL SECURITY SCHEME ,(10 a.m.) LONDON. Dec. 4. Although Eire's application to join the United Nations was not accepted, there is evidence that she is proceeding with defence plans to fit in with the general scheme of global security which the United Nations is pledged to effect. Eire is increasing her army, equipping her air force with the best machines and her navy is being augmented by the addition of six British corvettes. The navy is being reorganised under the direction of a retired British naval officer. 1 This is regarded as an endorsement of Mr. de Valera’s recent comment that once Eire was a member of the United Nations she could not lightly withdraw from her international obligations and as an indication that Eire will maintain close interest in the United Kingdom’s own security arrangements.
