Outside buyers, including some from the West Coast, entered the market for store wethers at Stortford Lodge yesterday, resulting in a most.buoyant sale with wether values firmer. Other classes of sheep sold at late rates. The yarding of 4000 head included a number of graziers’ lines. Good two-tooth wethers made from 23s lOd to 28s, medium 25s 4d to 2Gs, small 22s lid to 24s Id; fourth-tooth wethers, 31s Bd, and young f. and f. wethers 29s 4d to 29s Bd. Values eased accordingly. Included in the yarding was a good proportion of heavy ox, for which butchers operated within definite reserves, reflecting a preference for lighter beasts for the summer grade. One heavy bullock brought £2O early in the sale, but subsequently ox values i eased by fully 10s a head, prime bullocks spiling at £lB 16s to £l9 16s and lighter from £l6 18s Gd to £l7 8s 6d. Prime cows made £l2 13s Gd to £l2 16s: medium £lO 13s 6d to £ll 8s 6d; and heifers £l3 3s Gd.

Fat sheep were in short supply. Values for wethers rose about Is a head, with heavy sorts making 35s lOd to 37s 4d and medium 33s 4d. Shorn ewes met a firm sale at from 25s 7d to 26s lOd, unfinished 21s Id, woolly ewes 35s lOd, spring lambs 28s lOd to 34s 7d. Grown store cattle met with a keen inquiry when a yarding of 1250 head was offered to buyers. Some attractive lines of yearlings, on the other hand, were not so easy to quit. Bullocks sold well, the top price being £l6 (is obtained for a particularly attractive draft of 20 four-year A.A. beasts. Other bullocks sold from £l3 to £ls 15s. The market for empty cows also was strong, sales making from £3 4s to £8 12s. Usefully-grown yearling steers made from £5 17s Gd to £6 lls, small £4 to £5. Apart from empty cows, very little female stock came forward.
