VOTING_AT U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL NEW MEMBERS ADMITTED

NEW YORK. Nov. 19.

Afghanistan, Iceland and Sweden have signed articles of adherence to Ihc United Nations' Charter and to-day took their seats in the Assembly as the lirst new members since the signing Ipy the 51 original nations. The General Assembly elected Belgium, Colombia and Syria as nonwerina'ieni members o. .the Security Council. They replace Mexico, Egypt and the Netherlands and will begin a two years' term at the end of I he yea". Colombia received 51 votes, Syria 45 and Belgium 43 on the first balloteach obtaining the requisite present geographical distribution with Latin Americans retaining two votes and the Arab bloc and the European Low Countries one vote each. The Associated Press says the election assures little change in political complexion of the council. India, which is reported to have put up a hard backstage fight to win a seat on the council, polled only 13 votes. Norway obtained iour votes .and Canada. Cuba, Greet, and Turkov one each.

The three other non-permanent members of the council—Australia, Brazil and Poland—still have another year to serve.

The Assembly carried unanimously an Egyptian resolution urging all members of the United Nations to “take prompt, energetic steps” to abolish religious and racial persecution and discrimination. M. Vyshinsky said Russia did not object, but regretted that “no names are given.” He added: “We know that racial persecutions are taking place and immediate steps are necessary to end them.” cue United States. Venezuela. New Zealand and Lebanon were elected to the Economic and Social Council. The voting was postponed with two other vacancies to be filled. New Zealand received 44 votes on the first ballot. Australia, which received only two became under the rules ineligible for succeeding ballots.
