MANCHESTER MELEE

STRIKERS AND STUDENTS BUS TRAFFIC STOPPED (10.15 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 20. Hundreds of transport strikers in Manchester, angered by the news that 70 buses had broken through the picket lines, tried to stop every double-decker coming out of the transport depot, says the Daily Express. Strikers frog-marched some student drivers, beat up others, deflated tyres and drained radiators. A student and striker fought in the driver's cabin of one bus as it zig-zagged along one of the main roads. Men and women pickets stormed the bus and attacked students as it was driven into the depot. One woman dragged out a girl student by the hair. ... A pitched battle went on until 20 policemen charged and broke up the melee. The policemen escorted students into the depot.’ Street clashes broke out in other parts of Manchester. A line of 100 strikers blocked 40 students were on their way to the corporation’s bus school for driving tests. A trade union secretary announced that the Manchester bus services will resume to-morrow morning. A mass meeting of bus strikers earlier decided to resume to-morrow if volunteers were withdrawn by 4 p.m. to-day, and later all volunteer-driven buses were called off their runs.
