CORRECT PLACING

PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS VARIOUS CONTENTIONS The correct placing of pedestrian crossings in Gisborne was again brought before the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce last evening, when Mr. H. A. Dear said that visiting traffic inspectors had laughed at the location of the crossings and he thought that the crossings should be on the corner of the streets. From personal observations, he said, more people still crossed at the corners than on the authorised crossings. Mr. H. H. De Costa spoke in defence of the present location of the crossings, and said that Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, touring manager of the Automobile Association (Auckland) had recently said they were in the best position for the town. Mr. De Costa thougnt they should stay there. Mr. C. J. Cox contended that the crossings should be at the corners as they would then continue on the natural flow ot the pedestrian traffic along the footpaths. The matter appeared to be one tnat should be dealt with by motoring organisations, such us the Automobile Association, said Mr. G. A. Nichols The Chamber ot Commerce should leave it to them and to the Gisboine Borough Council. This view was supported by the chairman, Mr. T. A N. Corson, and the matter was allowed to lapse.
