FIRE AT WHAKATANE

PAPER MILLS BUILDING

The main waste paper store attached to the Whakatane paper mills was slightly damaged by fire on Sunday. Although there were 700 tons of paper contained in the building, very little was damaged, the automatic sprinkler system holding the fire in check until the mill brigade, and later the Whakatane volunteer fire brigade, arrived. Because of the dense smoke the firemen had a difficult task in locating the seat of the fire, which took two hours to quench. The building and contents were covered by insurance. A fire at the mills at the beginning of this month destroyed about 150 tons of waste paper.
