FLAME THROWERS

WEED ERADICATION GISBORNE BOROUGH USE More use is to be made of flamethrowers in the Gisborne Borough to eradicate weeds from the footpaths. At a meeting of the council on Tuesday night it was decided to purchase an additional two flame-throwers. Supporting this purchase, Mr. R. Morse said that use could be made of the equipment to clear the fire-break on the Kaiti Hill reserve before the operation became hazardous. That would save the work of the 11 men employed on that work for the past three years.

Mr. G. J. Jeune offered the criticism that .the decision was belated. Pie claimed to have agitated for a similar purchase for the pas.t three years, and said nothing had been done. Too much monev “had been thrown away playing with the footpaths and playing with the streets: the town is crying out about the state, the streets have been allowed to get into in the past three years."

Mr. F. Tolerton: Under this method there will be no disruption of the surface of the footpaths.
