QUARTERS FOR SQUATTERS
(10 a.m.) LONDON. Sept. 22. The evacuation of 100 squatters from the Duchess of Bedford’s House to the rest centre was upset by the discovery that the centre is at present occupied by building workers who, at a mass meeting, refused to move, saying that they were nicely settled in with organised social activities, including darts. The Exchange Telegraph says that the squatters will probably be sent tc houses in Kensington originally requisitioned for the builders. The Government, in an attempt tc solve squatting, lias offered 718 camps tc the local authorities for the temporary accommodation of GOOD families who are affected by the housing shortage. The London County Council has arranged to move the squatters from ihe rest house, thus breaking the deadlock created by the refusal of the building workers to move out when the squatters arrived from the Duchess of Bedford’s house.
