RIMUTAKA TUNNEL
FIVE OR SIX YEARS’ JOB SECOND LONGEST IN N.Z. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 18. Engineers estimate that five or six years vdll be taken in building the Rimutaka tunnel which, next to O.tira, will be the longest ever constructed in New Zealand. Preparations are being made to commence work on the access road which will lead from the vicinity of Pigeon Bush up the valley of Lucena Creek on the Wairarapa side for two miles to where the northern portal of the tunnel will be. It is expected that it will be some months before work is started on the actual tunnelling. From 150 to 200 men will be required for the job when it gets properly under way. About 80 experienced tunnellers will be wanted, bu.t it is thought there will not be any hold-up through lack of trained men. The Rimutaka tunnel will be four and three-quarter miles long as compared with Otira's five miles 25 chains.
National Savings Last week 292 towns throughout the Dominion, including all the principal centres, reached their National Savings quotas. Thames is the latest chief post office centre to record the attainment of the full year's quota.
