STATE BUYS SHARES

UNION AIRWAYS’ CONTROL NOW UNDER CORPORATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 15. An announcement that the Government had bought the share capital of Union Airways of New Zealand, Limited, and that New Zealand National Airways Corporation would now take over the shares from the Government was made yesterday by the Minister in Charge of Civil Aviation, Mr. F. Jones. The Minister added that the acquisition of the shares took place as from April 1 last, and since then Union Airways had operated on behalf of the Government under supervision of the chairman of the corporation, Sir Leonard Isitt.

The Minister paid a tribute to the fine pioneering effort of Union Airways in introducing regular air transport services in New Zealand, and referred also to the fine record of the company whose standard of safety and efficiency compared favourably with the standards of airways operated in other countries.
