REVOLT QUELLED
LA PAZ STUDENTS GRIM STREET FIGHTING 100 REPORTED KILLED ;(10 a.m.) BUENOS AIRES, July 21. The Bolivian Embassy announced that Dr. Villarroel’s Government had quelled a second revolutionary attempt within five weeks by forcing the surrender of a group of heavily-armed students at La Paz University. Travellers who have reached Arica, in Chile, say that the Bolivian political situation is grave. The country’s industry and commerce has been halted by a strike of teachers, civil servants and railwaymen. According to a report from Chile, 100 persons were killed and 150 wounded during the disturbances at La Paz on Thursday. Rebellious students fired on Bolivian Cabinet Ministers, wounding one and narrowly missing the President, Dr. Villarroel, who was speaking from a balcony. One policeman was killed. A despatch from Arequippa, in Peru, quoting Bolivian private sources, stated that the situation at La Paz remained chaotic all day Friday with bloody fighting. Many persons were killed. The Bolivian Embassy statement did not mention the casualties and claimed that the city was completely tranquil, with all the subversive centres dominated by the Government. The Government alleged that Alfredo, who is stated to be acting under Communist instructions, led the uprising on Thursday. Dr. Villarroel has appointed a new Cabinet of all military men.
