The two herd sires o£ the Matawai Aberdeen-A-ngus Stud were quitted yesterday, Elm of Ngawaka selling at lflfigns. to Mr. O. E. Bartram, lolaga P.av, and Oxford of Kowhiwhi at 180 gns. to Mrs. E. Matthews, Gisborne.

The sale was a combined one at the Matawhero saleyards when cows ol' the Glenroa Stud were offered on account of the estate of A. F. McLean. Oloko. and the Matawai Stud was dispersed owing to the ill-health oi the ownci Mr. J. Davenport. Matawai. There were some “sticky” patches in the sale when buyers refused to be interested in anything apart from animals showing quality. There was a good attendance of buyers.

Kay, of To Awamutu, during the early stages of the combined Aberdeen Angus sales at the Matawhcro stock yards yesterday of the Glenora Stud on account of the estate of the late Mr. A. F. McLean and the Matawai Stud on account of Mr. J. Davonport, Matawai. The Matawai Stud lots were olt'ered first to a good attendance of buyers. In the morning's sale the Matawai cows averaged 27gns. and 11 heifer calves sold at an average of lCgns. Start of the Studs The Glenora Stud was founded in 1939 when a small number of choice females were purchased at the bpringfield and Matapihi sales. Additions were made later by the purchase of selected heifers from the Malanuku herd. In four out of five selling years Glenora bulls obtained the highest average prices at the Gisborne combined breeders’ bull sales. The Matawai Stud was founded m 1935 by the purchase of two selected cows from the Waitercnui Stud. The Ben Lomond Stud provided further contributions and other additions were made from Akitio, Matapihi. and Springfield sales Great care had been taken always with the selection or herd sires and Mr. Davenport always has had a strong demand for his cattle and bulls sold annually by private treaty.
