WOMAN SENT TO GAOL
ESPIONAGE IN CANADA WANTED TO HELP RUSSIA (9 a.m.) OTTAWA, April 14. Emma Woikin was sentenced to two and a half years’ imprisonment on charges of breaches of the Official Secrets Act in connection with the Soviet spy ring. Before being sentenced she told the court that she gave the information to Major Sokolov, an official of the Soviet Embassy because she wanted to help Russia and not to hurt Canada. She felt there was hope for the world's poor people in Communism. Her knowledge of Russia was entirely based on reading but at one time she applied for Russian citizenship because she wanted to learn the facts.
