BRITAIN’S LEAD
WORLD FEDERATION? MISSION TO PERFORM “STRANGE PHENOMENON” ;<lO a.m.) LONDON. April 14. “The British Empire emerged from the war re-born and with a mission to establish a world federation," said the British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Ernest Bevin, in a speech. “Nothing will ever prevent the Empire surviving, because I feel it has an extraordinary mission to fulfil. It is one of those strange phenomena in the world. I cannot explain it, but we have found the secret of combining great masses of people without destroying their liberty and at the same time maintaining freedom for them all. “From the world discussions there seems to be a streak of light which encourages us to believe that, if we maintain our policy on a firm and true course, the secret which Britain discovered may yet become the foundation for a federation of the world.”
