EASTER BAKING

AUCKLAND UNION “POOR CONCESSION!” MASTER BAKERS’ VIEW (P.A.I AUCKLAND. April- 15. A decision to work Good Friday to bake bread for the Easter week-end was made at a special meeting of the Auckland branch of the Baking Trade Employees’ Union, when 'he foliowing statement was issued: — “The union has agreed on the recommendation of the Federation of Labour to bake all bread necessary for public consumption during the Easter weekend, all work to be done from Monday to Friday inclusive. To achieve this, members of the union are prepared to work on Good Friday, thus sacrificing their award holiday.” Commenting on this statement Mr. H. P. Burton, vice-president of the Auckland Master Bakers’ Association, said it was clearly another evasion of the award conditions, adding: “.If the men work Friday only and not —as normally would apply under the award —with work beginning late on Friday and continuing through the early hours of Saturday morning, then the master bakers must by law pay treble-time rates. It needs no imagination to see that such a resolution is a very poor concession!”

The Master Bakers’ Association will meet to-day to discuss the position.
