ONE MAN IN GAOL
PRISONER’S “GREAT TIME” MADE WAY FOR BULLION (9 a.m.) CANBERRA, April 6. When large quantities of gold had to be stored in Australia during the war the only prisoner in Broken Hill gaol was turned out of his cell to make way for bullion. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifley, revealed this when discussing Australian holdings in the House of Representatives. “I found that the gaol governor and three warders were looking after one prisoner at the Broken Hill gaol,” he said. “Large quantities of gold were accumulated there because the owners, including the Bank of England and the Dutch Government, were reluctant to incur the risks of shipping. The prisoner was having a great time and was very upset when I ordered his removal to the Long Bay gaol.”
