G.N. STEEPLES VICTORY WON IN RUN HOME PRINCE REGENT’S GAME BID (11.80 n.m.) LONDON. April 5. The Grand National Steeplechase of 4 nines and 356yds. nt Aintree, resulted:— Lovely CotRegent, 12.5, 3. Won hy four lengths; three lengths. Time, Omin. 33Jsee. , , Irish horses were prominent throughout the race and filled the first four places. Only six of the 34 starters finished. Lough Conn lea for the first round but fell at the twenty-first jump early in the second circuit, the rrenen horse Symbole fell early in the race and was killed. Limestoneweed led over Beecher s Brook for the second round. Both be .and Prince Regent had been prominent from the start. They made mistakes at Beecher s where at least half a dozen limners fell. Prince Regent. who was going easily throughout, passed Limestoneweed after they jumped Valentine’s for the second time when there were only five more fences over which he continued to gain ground. He had a long lead as he cleared the last jump and raced for the course proper, but challengers appeared in Lovely Cottage and Jack Finlay, both of whom made up ground over the last mile after being: well in the lead in the eary staples, Prince Regent’s weight began to tell. He slowed up and though he battled on gamely his task was too much. Both challengers passed him in the run to the post. The famous amateur rider, Captain Robert Petre. rode Lovely Cottage. Road traffic to the course was controlled from the air. A Lancashire police superintendent, flying a Auster plane over the roads, reported hold-ups by radio to 70 mobile radio stations so that the traffic could be switched to other routes when jams occurred.
