BONUS PAYMENT

WAR RE-EMPLOYMENT STATE SUPERANNUITANTS RETROSPECTIVE TO 1942 (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 5. The Minister of Finance. Mr. W. Nash, has announced that a scheme has been agreed upon for the payment of a war bonus to those Government superannuitants who had been reemployed in the Government service during the war.

Mr. Nash recalled that legislative authority for the payment of this bonus was contained in the Finance Act (No. 2) passed at last session. Its purpose was to provide some recompense for retired civil servants who had returned to duty during the war when their services were urgently needed, but whose superannuation, in accordance with the law, had been reduced to ensure that their total income, including salary and superannuation, did not exceed their total income when last employed by the Gqvernmpnt.

Bonus of £52 a Tear

The bonus commences from April 1, 1942, and if the total remuneration (including salary, cost-of-living bonus, and retiring allowance, but excluding overtime), does not exceed £SOO a year, the bonus is £52 a year. If the total, remuneration exceeds £SOO, the bonus decreases by £1 for each £1 of the excess until the bonus is reduced to £26 a year, when it becomes a flat rath at this amount.

The bonus will not in any case be greater than the amount by which the retiring allowances had been reduced. Payments will be made as quickly as possible and will be in respect of complete months of re-employment during the four-yearly period ended March 31. 1946.

Mr. Nash said he felt that this scheme would meet equitably the cases of quite a large number of Government superannuitants, whose experienced services had been utilised to meet the pressure brought about bv the war. but who found themselves deprived of a portion of their retiring allowances by legislation designed to meet the conditions of peace.
