MATCH OUTPUT DOWN
SHORTAGE OF LABOUR TWO BOXES EACH A WEEK (P.A.) WELLINGTON. April 5. The present output of matches in New Zealand, both wooden and wax, now limits consumption to about two boxes per head of population each week. The output of the Wellington match factory, according to a report yesterday, is estimated at approximately 2.000.000 boxes a week, and the output of tlie South Island factory is reported to be less than this figure. The present output represents only a small part of the pre-war production.
There is no dearth of raw materials used in the manufacture of matches. It is stated that the present acute shortage of matches can be attributed solely to a shortage of labour. Licenses were granted recently for the importation of matches up to 75 per cent of the value of the matches imported in 1938. It is thought likely that the bulk of these will come from Sweden.
