COUPON-SAVING
HELP FOR BRITAIN AVOIDANCE OF WASTE CAMPAIGN APPEAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 27. “The disorganisation of food supplies by the war has been magnified by an almost unprecedented series of disastrous drought and climatic conditions overseas to the degree that starvation literally faces millions of people, said the chairman of the Famine Emergency Committee. Mr. T. N. Smallwood, in an address last night in which he appealed for support for the food for Britain campaign. Mr. Smallwood said food supplies could be increased indirectly by using suitable substitutes, lessening as far as possible our call on grain, sugar, and other imported foodstuffs, and directly by reducing consumption and making more meat, butter, cheese and milk products avicfinble to Britain. There was no suggestion that anyone should go without necessary food of sufficient quantity and variety. Least of all was it suggested that the diet ot children should be lessened or interfered with in any way which would undermine their health and vitality. The first cardinal principle in the campaign was the avoidance of waste of anv kind of usable foodstuffs, on the plea ‘that such waste was a crime against starving humanity. The committee was arranging through the Post Office national savings network for coupon-saving cards lo go to every household. These were to apply to butter and meat only at present. Unused coupons should be cancelled by drawing a line through them and pasting them on these cards. They should be taken at convenient intervals to the nearest Post Office for a date stamp and cancellation recording.
