“OBSERVERS NOT NEEDED”

MORE ORDERS CANCELLED (2.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, March 22. The Federal Government does not countenance putting observers on relief ships taking food and other goods to the Netherlands East Indies, . stated the Minister of External Affairs, Dr. H. V. Evatt, in the House of Representatives. Dr. Evatt added that the Minister of Supply and Shipping, Senator Ashley, was trying to arrange for goods to he shipped to the Indies. An Opposition member asked for an assurance that the Australian Government. and not the watersiders, would determine the country’s foreign policy. A Melbourne report carries news of more cancellations of Dutch orders in favour of England and the United States. One of the largest engineering firms in Australia has dismissed 180 employees because an order by the Netherlands East Indies Government for materials needed to restore communications has been cancelled.
