AMERICAN LINERS
CALLS AT AUCKLAND
THREE IN APRIL AND MAY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 21. People awaiting urgent transport to the United States, including about 100 New Zealanders who hold priorities, will be pleased to learn of trips by three Matson liners from San Francisco and back in April and May, announced this morning. It already had been announced that the Monterey was due at the end of the present month to embark 400 brides and 200 other passengers and that the remaining brides will be transported to the United States by two other vessels in the first fortnight in April. It was announced to-day that the Lurline was due at Auckland on April 28, ihe Monterey again on May 17, and the Mariposa on May 20. All the vessels will be restored to a civilian basis, but some bookings will be available for American citizens desiring to reach the United States.
It is stressed that it must not be assumed that the regular Matson service has been resumed, as it is possible that after these voyages the liners may be laid up for reconversion.
The ships will follow the usual route to Auckland, but on the return trip will proceed from Sydney to San Francisco direct. No information as yet is available concerning about 1000 fiancees of American servicemen or ex-servicemen desiring to travel to the United States.
