NEW VITALITY
THE MAORI PEOPLE GROWING POPULATION (P.A.) NAPIER, March 22. That the Maori people possessed a new vitality, new vigour, new vision and new earnestness was a statement made by the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, in an address at the final session of the New Zealand Rotary conference yesterday afternoon. Bishop Bennett stressed the fact that from a declining population of 40,000 50 years ago, the Maori race was increasing with a population just on 100,000 to-day. “The Maori race is not going back,” said Bishop Bennett. “It is going ahead and is making new progress in many spheres of our civilised work.” His Lordship remarked that of the 3380 men who comprised the Maori Battalion 2595 had been listed as casualties.
He stressed the fact that the Maori was a child of the land, which was his native environment but. unfortunately, only one-quarter of the area of land needed for the settlement of the Maori race was available.
Appealing for a sympathetic approach to this and other problems affecting his people, Bishop Bennett observed that the good that would result would be reflected on the European race as a double blessing for years to come.
