Lifeless Store Cattle Sale A lifeless sale existed for the 250 head of store cattle, which attracted little interest. Quality was not a feature of the entry, many lines showing the effects of the hard season. Yearling steers made £4 Is and £4 10s, an exceptionally good line of twooff steers made £8 Bs, and the value of three-off steers was £8 9s. In-calf cows, hard done, sold at £1 14s, and empty cows £2 11s to £3 7s. The only station line of 18 months heifers offered sold at £3. Down from the Wairoa back country, a pen of 45 30-rnonths A.A. steers, mixed in size and condition, was passed at £7 ss. Another Wairoa district pen of 52 three-ofi horned Hereford steers, in good store order, but mixed in size, realised £8 9s, subject to vendor's approval. Fat Heifers Sell Well Females again predominated in a yarding of 185 beef, and prices for this class of beef remained firm in the early selling, although they depreciated up to 15s late in the sale. Ox beef, although in short supply, was not eagerly sought after, and auctioneers had to battle hard to sell anything but the top quality pens. Prices were a shade below schedule for bullocks. Bullocks, solidly-finished, ranged from £lB Is to £l9 16s. Other heavy bullocks realised £ls 13s 6d to £l7 3s 6d. Steers realised £lO 16s to £l2 8s 6d. Top quality heifers sold freely early in the sale at £ll 3s Gd to £l3 13s Gd. and late in the sale, when only a few butchers were operating, values for well-finished pens ranged from £lO Is to £ll Is. Lighter sorts realised £9 3s 6d to £9 11s, and small-grown pens down to £7 8s Gd. Only a few cows were yarded, wellfinished heavy sorts making £ll 6s and medium £9, with lighter unfinished pens down to £7 3s Gd. Good quality, well-grown vealers made £4 Gs to £6 3s, and smaller grown £2 12s Gd to £3 18s.
