TOWN TEAMS WINNERS

CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIP SENIOR AND INTERMEDIATE Teams representing Gisborne and Kahutia bowling clubs respectively won the senior and intermediate "champion of champion" pairs competition conducted by the Gisborne-Last Coast Bowling Centre on the Kahutia clubs greenß during the week-end. F. Roberts nnd r. W. Smith were unbeaten In the senior division, and R. Lawless nnd J■ Wilson had a narrow win in the intermediate division from the Tolaga Bay pair, who ran them to a tie on the final and in the re-play were beaten by only one point. Intermittent rain affected the running of the green to some extent, and the skill and judgment were more than ever the essential ingredients of success. Some very fine bowling was witnessed during the two days play.

In the senior division, Roberts and Smith (s) for Gisborne, played E. Esquilant and H. E. Powell (s), for Kahutia, the game being even to the eighteenth head, with all four contestants making almost every shot tell. Powell was especially successful in his driving, in the earlier stages of the game, and he saved some had heads by this means. the eighteenth bond, the score was .17-14 in Smith’s favour, and Smith lay one on the head nt the change-over. Powell elected to drive with both his howls, and had the misfortune to take out his lead’s short ones, which left his opponent five up. The score was now 22-14 in favour of the Gisborne pair, and Smith nailed the result with singles on each of the twentieth and twenty-first heads, running out the winner 24-14. The Tolaga Bay pair, O. Hurn and R. R. Hays, gave the Kahutia finalists. R. Lawless and J. Wilson, a very fine tussle for the intermediate honours. The twenty-first head found the score even at 16-all, and in the necessary re-play over 21 heads, the two pairs pegged along in close touch all the way. It was not until the final how! was played that the decision cleared up. the Tolaga Bay skipper nudging Wilson's winning bowl with two successive shots, hut just failing to move it out of the winning position. An indication of the tightness of the play is given by the score, 13-12, by which Lawless nnd Wilson won the 1046 intermediate pairs championship.
