SEVERE HAILSTORM

ASHBURTON SUFFERS

(P.A.) ASHBURTON, l'cb. 18. One of the worst hailstorms in ■!<* years hit Ashburton yesterday afternoon. Tiie rattle of tiie hail on the roofs could be heard half a mile away as the storm approached. People caught outdoors had an unenviable time, bcimr pelted by

stones up to half an inch in diameter.

The (fullers on buildings were quickly blocked and water flawed into shops and houses. There were indications at the height of the storm that the damage would run into thousands, but an inspection this morning disclosed that the damage was not nearly so great as at first thought. In one house a 10-gallon container was filled in a short time and 32 sacks were saturated in an effort to protect the furniture. Vegetable gardens suffered severely.
