The story of the defence of Malta was told .to members of the Auckland Rotary Club yesterday by LieutenantGeneral Sir William Dobbie, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the George Cross island in 1940-42. A civic welcome was extended to Sir William Dobbie last night, when the Town Hall was filled.—P.A.
After 47 years with the Union Steam Ship Company, Mr. J. Neale, manager of the Wellington branch, will retire on March 31. He will be succeeded by Mr. S. J. Davis, who is at present manager of the Grcymouth branch. Mr. L. H. Bohmann, assistant manager ol the Wellington branch, will become manager at Grcymouth. while Mr. D. Parry, of the head office staff of the company, will replace Mr. Bohmann. After joining the Union Company at Nelson in 1899, Mr. Neale spent some time at sea as a purser, later serving at New Plymouth and then in the head office at Dunedin in 1911. He came to the Wellington branch in the same year, being appointed traffic manager in 1915, assistant branch manager in 1934, and manager in 1939. —P.A.
