COLLEAGUES SURPRISED

EARLY ANNOUNCFA IE NT (10 a.m.) SYDNEY. Feb. 14

The Premier of New South Wales, Mr. W. ,). McKell. to-night announced ins intention to retire from State politics. He will not contest the Redfern, his present seat which he

has held for nearly 30 years and will retire into private life. Mr. McKell will retire from Jhe Premiership before the State electrons which, if Parliament runs its full term, will be held about May next year. The Ministers were aware of Hie Premier’s intention before to-night, but most members of the State Parliamentary Labour Party had no Aiding that Mr. McKell would retire from the Premiership before the next State elections.

Members were aware he was resentful of the criticism of the Government. both in the party and outside the party room, but they did not think he would decide so early in the new year to announce his intention to resign from the leadership of the party.
