U.S. LOAN ESSENTIAL
AVERTING ECONOMIC WAR
RESTORATION OF BRITAIN (10 a.m.) NEW YORK. Feb. 13.
Congressional ratification of the proposed American loan to Britain was essential to prevent economic warfare among the three great trading blocs — British, American and Russian and to safeguard American foreign trade and world peace, said the Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. William Clayton. in a speech. Mr. Clayton estimated that if Britain obtained the loan her economic reconstruction by 1949 would have progressed sufficiently far for her to become more or less self-sustaining, with suflicent visible and invisible (such as shipping) exports to pay for her current import needs and resume her old position as the world’s best customer for American products.
